How can we interpret Mars retrograde in air signs? Air signs symbolize the abstract, cerebral, and ethereal processes: in Gemini, language is born; in Libra, the soul becomes conscious of the presence of “the other”; and in Aquarius, the individual contextualizes her experience in relation to the collective forces.
Mars Retrograde in Gemini:
With Mars in Gemini, the soul is deeply entertained by dialectics: the interplay of opposites, contrasting perspectives, and contradiction naturally appeal to the soul. This placement often reflects a desire to engage with reality through comparison, debate, and intellectual exchange, deriving vitality from the friction generated by differing viewpoints.
The Socratic method, which tests beliefs through the posing of probing questions that reveal their inherent contradictions, should prove especially appealing to individuals with this Mars placement in their natal chart. Rather than seeking answers, Mars in Gemini is often energized by the very process of inquiry, exploration, and the continual refinement of ideas through dialogue.
From an evolutionary point of view, this placement often indicates curiosity and openness regarding sexual matters. Experimentation is encouraged, as is allowing oneself the freedom to change and evolve in terms of sexual preferences rather than wholeheartedly committing to predefined modalities.
Individuals with Mars in Gemini may also exhibit a strong affinity with a sibling, playmate, or classmate, often sharing a common passion, interest, or activity. Early educational experiences can be especially significant in shaping their development, as can pursuits related to communication, learning, and the acquisition of language. These individuals may be naturally drawn to exchanging ideas, exploring diverse interests, and engaging in activities that stimulate the mind.
With Mars retrograde in Gemini, the soul might have been exposed to too much preaching and not enough probing. Therefore, the evolutionary purpose in this lifetime would be resisting a tendency for ideological dogmatism and instead, allowing doubts to resurface in one’s mental convictions.
Alternatively, the soul may have encountered barriers to cognitive development, including cycles of incarnation as individuals with significant intellectual limitations. In this lifetime, therefore, an opportunity arises to remove those barriers through the cultivation and exercise of the unique intellectual gifts and cognitive capacities bestowed upon the individual.
Mars retrograde in Gemini may also suggest a past pattern of overreliance on the intellect, limiting the role of emotion and intuition in the soul’s evolutionary growth. Bringing awareness to this possibility can pave the way for greater inclusion of these neglected dimensions of experience. In this regard, one of Gemini’s ultimate evolutionary gifts is its capacity to hold multiple perspectives simultaneously. Through the ability to understand various sides of an argument, the Mercurial ground in which Mars is embedded retains flexibility and openness toward whatever has been dismissed as insignificant, contradictory, or unacceptable.
In this case, Mars can become a crusader for truth, though not in an exclusive Sagittarian sense. Rather, it seeks truth through inclusion: truth becomes the sum of all that has been expressed and explored, available to anyone willing to question it, rather than a doctrine selected by the “qualified authorities” and accessible only to a privileged few.
Mars retrograde in this position can also indicate a past-life pattern involving either excessive involvement or insufficient involvement with a sibling, close friend, or peer. In such cases, the evolutionary task centers on re-evaluating the role these individuals play in one’s current life. Is the individual asserting herself too strongly or not strongly enough within these relationships? Is she attempting to avoid or disengage from such connections altogether? In either case, developing conscious awareness of these patterns is essential for integrating the evolutionary lessons associated with this particular retrograde energy in the natal chart.
Mars Retrograde in Libra:
With Mars in Libra, the soul seeks justice and equilibrium with regard to any undertaken action, and thus is inevitably prone to what is described as “analysis paralysis.”
As Mars in Libra represents a civilized mask on a primal energy, the sexual fire may, in fact, be quite difficult to kindle if the partner does not comply with the rules of courtly love during the initial stages of the relationship. Words mean as much as deeds with this placement; therefore, a degree of intellectual rapport is usually necessary for the sexual union to be fulfilling. Music and dancing can reawaken a long-extinguished spark, especially if accompanied by tasteful conversation and graceful manners. To declare words of commitment or to socially disclose one’s relationship will add to the charm.
By engaging the other, the soul provides herself with a mirror to appreciate herself. One may thus observe that the erotic charge has a slightly narcissistic flavor with this Mars placement. The relational nature of desire, in this case, often impedes the soul from engaging herself in one-sided erotic encounters: If the other is not fully present, consenting, and appreciative, the mirror will not be there, and therefore the erotic charge will vanish.
With Mars retrograde in Libra, the soul has probably already been engaged in and challenged by at least one significant relationship in prior life cycles or through ancestral lineage, yet there may also exist an evolutionary necessity for the soul to re-engage herself in relationships that challenge her narcissistic need to be mirrored by the other. These experiences would ultimately serve as catalysts for the soul to re-orient herself towards self-sovereignty.
Contingent upon other modifiers affecting the retrograde Mars in the birth chart, energy may have been excessively directed towards the other, rather than used for achieving one’s personal goals in life. Libido may have been disproportionately invested in satisfying the other rather than fulfilling oneself. Sexual performance could have been [ab]used as a means of keeping the other committed to oneself, rather than for the sake of mutual pleasure.
Alternatively, the soul may have chosen to reincarnate under this configuration in order to balance an impulse for non-consensual sex or to modify an excessive appetite for instant gratification. Such primal patterns may have been deeply ingrained in the soul during prior life cycles or through the ancestral lineage, and now the soul is offered a fresh chance to “civilize” herself and learn the art of relating.
In some cases, retrograde Mars in Libra may imply that the desire to relate has become the soul’s raison d’etre, and thus in this lifetime the soul will be presented with opportunities to authenticate herself through breakups or periods of celibacy. These occasions (if they occur) will serve as blessings in disguise, and will duly propel the soul’s evolutionary purpose, as they will push the soul to reacquaint herself with the possibility of non-dualistic desire: a desire which comes from authenticity rather than narcissism.
Mars Retrograde in Aquarius:
With Mars in Aquarius, the soul has a predilection for the expenditure of energy in a non-linear fashion: there is often a gap between the stimulus that triggers action and the moment of action itself. An urge to move and shake things may arise in a seemingly haphazard manner, often for deeply unconscious reasons not readily available to the logical, linear mind.
From an evolutionary point of view, this Mars placement may hint at some level of residual trauma regarding yang functions, such as decisive action or sexual prowess, if, of course, corroborated by other factors in the chart. Asserting one’s will might have caused hardship in a past life, or the expression of one’s sexuality might have evoked aversion, condemnation, or antagonistic reactions from one’s family or society.
As Mars in Aquarius symbolizes a detached approach to the regulation of energy, non-personal reasons may impel the soul to initiate action as readily as personal incentives. On a higher level, this placement may also suggest that the soul is more interested in the communal than in the private; therefore, much of the available energy is invested in improving the conditions of others, whether they be one’s family members or friends, or one’s tribe or society as a whole.
With Mars retrograde in Aquarius, the soul might have dissociated herself from her own agency through becoming a vehicle for the collective, or in order to participate in the manifestation of higher ideals that may not have been personally relevant.
Alternatively, the soul may have lost contact with herself as a result of being abused in the process of serving higher ideals or being utterly subdued by collective forces, as would be the case in a dystopian existence (the fictional worlds portrayed in the novels 1984 by George Orwell and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood would be exemplary of such societies).
Having lived in a totalitarian context in which individual agency was simply not an option, and everyone had to duly yield to the mandates of a dictator, could be another possible thread in the journey of the soul. In this case, the context could have been a family with a dictatorial father or figurehead, or a society operating under an autocratic system.
A past life during which the soul served as a “soldier of fortune” may also be possible: the impetus of Mars was directed toward political or social causes without personalizing the cause. In this case, reincarnation under a retrograde Mars may serve the evolutionary purpose of realignment with one’s own principles in the process of serving the collective, rather than losing touch with one’s personal core through unquestioned alignment with the collective, as was the case in the previous life cycles.
As the German-American historian and philosopher Hannah Arendt aptly observed,
“Where all are guilty, nobody is. Guilt, unlike responsibility, always singles out; it is strictly personal.”
One of the evolutionary motifs implied in reincarnating under a retrograde Mars in Aquarius, therefore, could be learning to feel personally accountable for what the collective has sanctioned as justifiable, rather than dissolving one’s sense of responsibility within the collective norms, expectations, or demands.
